.africa

.Africa is the proposed Internet generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) for the African and Pan African communities and users wherever they may reside. The .africa gTLD serves as a regional domain for individuals and entities based in and out of Africa.

Status

The .Africa gTLD has not yet been delegated to any organization as registry operator. The .Africa application that was submitted by DotConnectAfrica Trust is now the subject of an unresolved disagreement with ICANN (DCA Trust vs ICANN) following an Independent Review Panel (IRP) Process that was invoked by DCA Trust under ICANN’s accountability mechanism in October 2013. The IRP was administrated by the International Center for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) New York, US.

DCA Trust had passed all the new gTLD applicant evaluation criteria, but before the Initial Evaluation (IE) result was issued, a Governmental Advisory Committee GAC Objection Advice that had been issued in Beijing in April 2013 was later accepted by the ICANN Board in early June 2013 which caused the ICANN Board to instruct ICANN staff that DCA Trust’s .Africa new gTLD application will not be approved. This had caused the non-completion of the evaluation of DCA Trust’s application; which then led DCA Trust to challenge the ICANN Board decision through a series of accountability mechanism.

Africa (Petrarch)

Africa is an epic poem in Latin hexameters by the 14th century Italian poet Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca). It tells the story of the Second Punic War, in which the Carthaginian general Hannibal invaded Italy, but Roman forces were eventually victorious after an invasion of north Africa led by Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, the epic poem's hero.

Background

Africa and De viris illustribus were partially inspired by Petrarch's visit to Rome in 1337. According to Bergin and Wilson (p. ix). It seems very likely that the inspirational vision of the Eternal City must have been the immediate spur to the design of the Africa and probably De viris illustribus as well. After returning from his grand tour, the first sections of Africa were written in the valley of Vaucluse. Petrarch recalls

The fact that he abandoned it early on is not entirely correct since it was far along when he received two invitations (from Rome and from Paris) in September 1340 each asking him to accept the crown as poet laureate. A preliminary form of the poem was completed in time for the laurel coronation April 8, 1341 (Easter Sunday).

Africa (Perpetuum Jazzile album)

Africa is 2009 Perpetuum Jazzile album. By large most successful song from the album is a capella version of Toto's "Africa", the performance video of which has received more than 15 million YouTube views since its publishing in May 2009 until September 2013.

Western station (CTA Brown Line)

Western is an 'L' station on the CTA's Brown Line. It is an elevated station with two side platforms, located in the Lincoln Square neighborhood. The adjacent stations are Rockwell, which is located about one quarter mile (0.4 km) to the west, and Damen, about one half mile (0.8 km) to the east. Between Western and Rockwell the line descends and runs on surface level tracks for the rest of the route to Kimball.

History

The station was put into service in 1907 as part of Northwestern Elevated Railroad's Ravenswood line, and has been rebuilt twice since—in the late 1920s, and again from 1979 to 1981. The current station consists of two side platforms, and a central storage line, its platforms were extended in 2006–07 to enable the station to accommodate eight railcars.

Berlin Wall Monument

A portion of the Berlin Wall is inside the station, and is dedicated to the citizens of Chicago for helping "secure the freedom" of Berlin. The Lincoln-Square Neighborhood has been historically German.

Western station (CTA Blue Line O'Hare branch)

Western is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, serving the Blue Line, on North Western Avenue near West Armitage Avenue. The station is located within the Bucktown neighborhood in the larger Logan Square community area. From Western, trains run at intervals of 2-7 minutes during rush-hour periods, and take 10 minutes to reach the Loop.

History

Western station opened on May 25, 1895 as part of the Metropolitan Elevated's Logan Square branch. In 1930, an Art Deco style façade replaced its original station entrance. In 2001, a minor refurbishment of the station included ADA-accessible elevators. During refurbishment the station Art Deco façade was restored with the station house.

Western Airlines Flight 2605

Western Airlines Flight 2605 was an international scheduled passenger flight from Los Angeles to Mexico City. On October 31, 1979, the aircraft used for the flight, a McDonnell Douglas DC-10, crashed at Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport in early morning fog after landing on a runway closed for maintenance. 72 of the 88 people on board, plus 1 person on the ground, died. The event was the third-deadliest aviation accident to occur on Mexican soil, after Mexicana Flight 704 and Flight 940, and the seventh-deadliest one involving a DC-10.

The crash of Flight 2605 was one of three fatal McDonnell Douglas DC-10 accidents in 1979, occurring just over five months after the crash of American Airlines Flight 191 at O'Hare International Airport and less than a month before the crash of Air New Zealand Flight 901 on Mount Erebus.

Aircraft and occupants

The aircraft involved was a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10 registered N903WA. It first flew in 1973 and over the course of its career logged a total of 24,614 flight hours. The three engines powering it were General Electric CF6-6Ks. On the accident flight, the aircraft had 77 passengers and 11 crew on board.
